Travailing Prayer

There can be no prevailing without travailing in prayer - Anonymous.

"Who has ever heard of such things?
Who has ever seen things like this?
... yet no sooner is Zion in labor
than she gives birth to her children."  (Isaiah 66:8).

“LORD, I have heard Thy speech, and was afraid: O LORD, revive Thy work in the midst of the years, in the midst of the years make known; in wrath remember mercy” ~ Habakkuk 3:2.

  • “Revival comes from heaven when heroic souls enter the conflict determined to win or die-or if need be, to win and die! "The kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force” -  Charles Finney.
  • “History is silent about revivals that did not begin with travailing prayer.” ~ Edwin Orr.
  •  Groanings which cannot be uttered are often prayers which cannot be refused.” ~ Charles Spurgeon.
  • John Knox – “Lord, give me Scotland or I die…”
  • St. Patrick – “God, give me souls or give me nothing.” (A rugged believer that brought dead animals and trees back to life).
  • Hebrides revival – “Lord, if you will not use us, please kill us.”
  • The brethren from England who brought the fire from Azusa Street revival gathered every day under the terrible cold. Their only prayer topic was, “Lord, give us men that will spread Your Fire in the streets of England.”
  • During the Indonesia Revival, those hungry hearts were seen praying day and night: “Lord, the harvest is ripe…if it pleases You, please use us…”
  • One prayer that was common during the days of William Seymour was: “Lord, this is another day that hell must lose men and women. Please, we are here, use us.”
  • Rachel – “When Rachel saw that she was not bearing Jacob any children. . . she said to her husband, Jacob, “Give me children or I die” (Genesis 301:1). We need to go to the Lord and cry to Him like that if our lives are not fruitful.
  • James B. Taylor – “I fell before the throne, and had a longing for souls: I thirsted to bring souls to Christ. I groaned to win souls, and almost with agony pleaded to have souls for Jesus…to the kingdom.I think I felt willing to lay out my life for souls of men. Money was not what I desired. Souls, souls I want souls. ‘Give me children,’ I wept with deep desire for souls to be saved and to be able to say, ‘Here I am, Lord, and the children Thou hast given me” (Heb. 2:13).
  • "Prayer is the lifeline of New Testament evangelism, the oxygen for its holy fire. The New Testament was born in prayer. It knows no evangelism without prayer, and no prayer which does not lead to evangelism.” – Anonymous.
  • "Revivals begin with God's own people; the Holy Spirit touches their heart anew, and gives them new fervor and compassion, and zeal, new light and life, and when He has thus come to you, He next goes forth to the valley of dry bones... Oh, what responsibility this lays on the Church of God!" - Andrew Bonar.
  • "Perhaps if there were more of that intense distress for souls that leads to tears, we should more frequently see the results we desire. Sometimes it may be that while we are complaining of the hardness of the hearts of those we are seeking to benefit, the hardness of our own hearts and our feeble apprehension of the solemn reality of eternal things may be the true cause of our want of success - James Hudson Taylor (from James Hudson Taylor Biography).
  • Father Nash (Charles Finney’s Testimony) - If we refuse to so strive we should not be surprised at the lack of God’s mighty stirrings. Is it not amazing that we have no problem with people wearing themselves out in sports for pleasure, work for money, politics for power, and programs for charity, but think it fanatical to so pray for souls? We would die for national freedom, but never for progress in the Kingdom of God. Is it any wonder we see so little of God’s great working? Nash would pray until he had to “go to bed absolutely sick, for weakness and faintness, under the pressure.” The world would have no problem with such dedication except that it was due to prayer for souls. Why should it be such a strange thing to the Church?“I have seen Christians who would be in an agony, when the minister was going into the pulpit, for fear his mind should be in a cloud, or his heart cold, or he should have no unction, and so a blessing should not come. I have labored with a man of this sort. He would pray until he got an assurance in his mind that God would be with me in preaching, and sometimes he would pray himself ill. I have known the time when he has been in darkness for a season, while the people were gathering, and his mind was full of anxiety, and he would go again and again to pray, till finally he would come into the room with a placid face, and say: ‘The Lord has come, and He will be with us.’ And I do not know that I ever found him mistaken.”

  • “I remember, when I have preached at different times in the country, and sometimes here, that my whole soul has agonized over men, every nerve of my body has been strained and I could have wept my very being out of my eyes and carried my whole frame away in a flood of tears, if I could win souls.

Reckon then that to acquire soul-winning power, you will have to go through mental torment and soul-distress. You must go into the fire if you are going to pull others out of it, and you will have to dive into the floods if you are going to draw others out of the water. You cannot rescue someone from fire without feeling the scotch of the conflagration, nor be a lifesaver without being covered with waves.” (C.H. Spurgeon).

SELF-DECREES AND DELCARATIONS

Warm-up, Faith-building Verses: Job 22:28-30

“You will also declare a thing, and it will be established for you; so light will shine on your ways.
When they cast you down, and you say, ‘Exaltation will come!’ then He will save the humbleperson.
He will even deliver one who is not innocent;
Yes, he will be delivered by the purity of your hands.“ (Job 22:28-30, cf. The Amplified).

It is written: ‘I believed; therefore I speak.’ Since we have that same spirit of faith, we also believe and therefore speak.” ( 2 Cor. 4:13).

“And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.” (Rev. 12:11).

“For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says.” (Mark 11:23).

“He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” (Matt. 17:20).

“Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus.” (Heb. 3:1).

“For the Lord takes pleasure in His people;
He will beautify the humble with salvation.

5 Let the saints be joyful in glory;
Let them sing aloud on their beds.
6 Let the high praises of God be in their mouth,
And a two-edged sword in their hand,
7 To execute vengeance on the nations,
And punishments on the peoples;
8 To bind their kings with chains,
And their nobles with fetters of iron;
9 To execute on them the written judgment
This honor have all His saints. Praise the Lord!” (Psalms 149:4-9).

CONFESSIONS

  • I will sing to the Lord for He has triumphed gloriously. He has cast both the horse-rider and the chariot into the depth of the sea. The Lord has overthrown those against His chosen children. The Lord has removed shame and reproach far away from us. He has done what He promised to do. The word of the Lord has not failed in our lives, and will never fail, in the name of Jesus.
  • Today, I declare with my mouth again, there is no one like the God of Jeshurun, who rides across the heavens to help me and on the clouds in His majesty (Deut. 33:26). There is no God like our God in all the earth. There is no God performing signs and wonders like our God. O Lord You are highly exalted in the heavens and in the earth. All the works of Your hand praise Your name, in the name of Jesus.
  • I come to You in the volume of the scriptures, as it is written that any tree You have not planted shall be rooted out (Mtt. 15:13). It is also written that the axe is laid to the root of any tree that does not bring forth good fruit (Luke 3:9). Let Your word be fulfilled in my life today, O Lord. Let every satanic implantation in my life be rooted out completely, in the name of Jesus. I disallow any evil tree to grow in my life. By the blood of Jesus, I come against everything that is contrary to the good will of God in my life. I come against everything against good success and sound health in my life. Let God arise and let all that troubles me be uprooted, in the name of Jesus.
  • Let the angels that excel in strength be dispatched to uproot anything and everything presently oppressing me. Let them uproot everything blocking my path to fulfillment in life. Let them uproot all the negative spiritual attachments in my life. Let them fight every spirit assigned to be causing failure at the edge of my breakthroughs, in the name of Jesus.
  • O Lord, hear and answer my cry as you did for Jonah from the belly of the fish. Hear and answer my cry for change. I need a major change to take place in my life. I need a divinely orchestrated change that will restore all my wasted years and efforts.
  • You have said that You will restore to me the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the crawling locust, the consuming locust, and the chewing locust . . . (Joel 2:25).
    O Lord I need you to bring back to life all the good things that are spiritually dead in my life. O Lord, arise for me, since You are the only Helper I have in heaven and on earth. Wipe away my tears, remove all reproaches and stigmas. Do something great and unusual that will change the course of my life forever, in the name of Jesus.
